Interesting solution I hadn’t thought of
One problem you face when living in a rural area is what kind of heating should I use, never mind the problem of cooling in the summer. Our farmhouse is just outside any area where we could get natural gas. And the individual electric wall heaters are quick and easy, but the electric bill can get shockingly high. Plus, they do not cool anything.
So we were faced with a propane forced-air furnace, which I’d never dealt with and highly doubted our 250-gallon LP tank would last long, especially after I put in the LP tankless water heater. So I was stuck with electric, but decided on a high-efficiency mini-split five-zone system. Checked all of the boxes, almost. Five zones does not get into those outlier rooms like the laundry room. And with plumbing in there it is essential that it be a fully conditioned space. An open door might not cut it on a cold winter day.
I have ducted fans available, and was considering putting one in the attic to draw air from the main living area into the laundry room. Attach it to a thermostat in the laundry room and it would be a very reasonable option. But then I saw this item and thought, pop in an extra wall outlet – wall was still open and the wiring is easy – and run this between the family room and the laundry. Not quite ideal since laundry rooms can get kind of noisy and sound definitely migrates through the wall opening, but the offset wall openings mitigates that slightly.
The one change I made is that I hardwired it. I removed the cord and ran my line into the cabinet. I don’t want another outlet and having a cord coming out of my wall. The fewer cords around the happier I am. So this solved my problem without having to do a lot of work, and it is fairly quiet – primarily due to the fact it has limited airflow (90 cfm is slightly more than a small bath exhaust fan).
I would not say I would use this for a room with very limited insulation or tends to be drafty. Nor would I use it for a room I plan to be sitting in a great deal. For a gas forced-air furnace you should have a register temp of 125-130 degrees. One of the reasons they feel wonderful in the winter. My gripe with heat pumps is that they will have a register temp around 105 degrees, and can feel cool and drafty if you are too near the register. This fan will have an outlet temp pretty much what the next room is, so if that is 72 degrees then this register temp will be 72 degrees. That would cause a person to say there is a cool draft in here.
So used in an appropriate way this is really nice, and fits perfectly in a standard 16″ o.c. bay. Just don’t have it blowing on you in the winter or you will regret installing it. Currently has a coupon for $15 off.
ALORAIR Room to Room Air Transfer Fan
Works great. Installation of course was a pain, but it moves a lot of air by using a barrel/squirrel cage fan vs vent mounted fans just use 80mm fans. Most interior walls do not contain insulation, so mounting isn’t a big issue, just time consuming. If you mount this high, you won’t be able to plug it in unless you run some Romex for an additional outlet, or direct wire this in a junction box, which is a whole different scenario. It is lower noise than I expected for a barrel fan, and the vent size was a bit smaller as well. But it gets the job done of pulling in the hotter air in the winter which was my issue, as we use a wood stove for all heating in winter. Summer is no issue, as I have 2 ac vents in this space, so only heat was an issue.
good value for the price
It’s incredibly powerful for its size and really gets the air moving.
